St. Christiopher’s Parish Endowment Did you know that St. Christopher’s Parish has an endowment with the Utah Catholic Foundation?  It was started with a donation from the parish in 2020 with an initial corpus of $5000 and is intended for general parish use.  The fund has just over $6700 with interest and two additional donations. The fund is set up as ‘Permanent Restricted’ which means the corpus stays in the fund, but the earnings are available to the parish as needed.  If you would like to make a donation to our endowment for the long-term care of St. Christophers, please contact Fr. Rick for further details.

Entertaining Angels at the Social Hour.  We never know which holy messengers may be visiting the parish and offering us the opportunity to recognize them (Heb. 18:3).   We could still use a couple more teams to help host our Sunday post-Mass social hour.  It’s easy and VERY FUN.  See the sign-up list in the gathering space for more details.

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

On this Independence Day weekend, the second verse of today’s recessional hymn seems to address one of the great challenges to our modern American culture.  What types of flaws still need to be mended?  In what areas are there the greatest need for self-control?  At what point in our American history was it specifically recognized that our systems of free enterprise and democracy were not intended for an amoral people?  How would a common morality be most appropriately and effectively applied on a daily basis?  How are we doing in this area?  Upon what is our common morality based in 2025?

Homily Reflection Questions

1     Lk. 10:10-11:   “Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, ‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’” Why this urgency?  How might this approach differ from our modern approach to ministry, at least in the United States?

2   Lk. 10:2.   ‘Jesus said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so, ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”’  In today’s Church in the United States how have you observed an abundant harvest?

3  Lk. 10:3  “Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.”  Jesus is about to announce that “the Kingdom of God is at hand for your.”  Why would it be so dangerous for the disciples to announce such a hopeful and joyous message?

4  Lk. 10:4   In sending forth the disciples Jesus also instructs them to, *Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.”  How does this approach to ministry and discipleship compare and relate to contemporary Catholic ministry in the United States?  In Utah especially? How does traveling light allude to major aspects of the true nature of Christianity?  Hint:  Pilgrim people.  Stewardship.

5   Is. 66:10.  “For thus says the LORD:  ‘Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent.’”  How has this prophesy made over 600 years before Christ proved to be a faithful promise of God?

6  How many members of the Detroit Tigers have been named to the starting line-up of this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Team?  Who are they?

7.  How many hot dogs did this year’s winner of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest consume?  Men’s Division?  Women’s Division?  Must contestants also consume a bun with each wiener?  Hint:  70.5, 33, Yes.
