Labor Day and the Dignity of Work from the US Catholic Bishops

“In the Catholic tradition, work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continued participation in God’s creative action. As we mark Labor Day each year, we are invited in a special way to reflect on the persistence of low wages and inequality in our workplaces. In your own experience of work—in an office setting, serving others, as a student, or working in the home—how have you experienced work as a form of participation in God’s creative action? How are persistent low wages a barrier to full participation in that creative action? What can you do to support workplaces built upon justice and dignity?”  https://www.usccb.org/committees/domestic-justice-and-human-development/labor-day-resources  (A click away on the St. Christopher’s website).

Catholic Social Teaching:  Pope Leo is encouraging us all to consider the Church’s systematic approach to living out our role as a Holy People in a world of increased technological complexity. Please join us on Thursdays from 5:30 PM to 7PM as we venture into a more focused reading of Pope Leo’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. We will continue to discuss Chapter 2 and start Ch. 3 of the encyclical.  See Summary of the encyclical on our website bulletin: Summary Magnifica Humanitas EN.pdf – Google Drive

St. Christopher Endowment:  Did you know that St. Christopher’s Parish has an endowment with the Utah Catholic Foundation?  It was started with a donation from the parish in 2020 with an initial corpus of $5000 and is intended for general parish use.  The fund has now over $60,000 with interest and additional donations as of 7-30-26. The fund is set up as ‘Permanent Restricted’ which means the corpus stays in the fund, but the earnings are available to the parish annually as needed.  If you would like to make a donation to our endowment for the long-term care of St. Christopher’s, please contact Fr. Rick for further details.

Reporting Abuse:  If you observe or have reason to believe that a child, young person or vulnerable adult has been subjected to abuse by a priest, deacon, employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, you must report the alleged abuse to local law enforcement and state agencies, and you must notify the Diocesan Office of Safe Environment at safeenv@dioslc.org or call 801-328-8641, x344.       https://www.dioslc.org/safe-environment

Women’s Day of Reflection at St. Dominic’s Chapel Women of the parish are invited to participate in a one-day Day of Reflection on Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 AM to about 4:00 PM.  St. Dominic’s Chapel is located near the entrance of Bryce Canyon National Park. Along with Mass, and a variety of prayer opportunities we will be discussing sections of the book, The Persistent God:  A Guide to Deepening Prayer, by Albert Haase, OFM.   If interested, contact Fr. Rick.  The seats are filling up fast.

Homily Reflection Questions

  1. Ezekiel 33:7-9.  In the first reading today God is telling the prophet (and us) to warn the wicked of their transgressions.  How can we ‘warn the wicked’ without judging or even coming across as too ‘judgy’ or self-righteous?

2 Ps. 95:8. “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”  When has your heart been most hardened?  Who is most difficult for you to forgive?  How has your heart softened and strengthened?  How long did it take?  How has your experience enabled you to help others to ‘soften’ their hearts?

3 Ps. 95. What happened “at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert”?  How is that still a warning to us today?

4 St. Paul in his letter to the Romans (13:9) today reminds us, among other things “to not covet”.  What does it mean to covet?  Why is that so dangerous?

5 In the Catholic tradition work is more that a way to make a living; it is a form of continued participation in God’s creative action?  How does you work most participate in God’s creative action?
