Homily Reflections
As we approach the end of Ordinary Time in the liturgical year, we hear of the ‘end times’ in the Scripture readings today. We are told that at the end times we will hear of wars and insurrections, nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues. Of course, all of these events recur throughout history and surely, they usher in ‘the end of the world as people of that time knew it.” We should always be aware of the impending end of our own individual lives, and the end of all time, but also the end of times as we have known it. For people living in the past 60 or 70 years we have seen the end of a somewhat simpler time, several times. The ever-increasing complexity and speed of modern technology, a world increasingly based on materialism and recreation, the sexual revolution which has changed the cultural understanding of what it means to be man and woman, and the lower incidence of people practicing an organized religion are examples of the changes. The end of how things used to be. Affordable housing and affordable health care and even affordable food for the commoners in the United States are not as expected as they once were. Who would have expected that 30 or 40 years ago?
The big takeaway from today’s readings as well as the times we are living in is this, “The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.” We are living in the times where we can expect to see “the rising of the sun of justice with it healing rays.” We should head the Lord’s warning that, “You not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them!”
1 Malachi 3:20 “But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.” What constitutes ‘justice’ in biblical parlance? (right relationship with God, with each other and with the rest of creation.). What would right relationship look like? (Garden of Eden?) What would THAT look like?
2 Lk. 21:19 “You will be hated by all because of my name… By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” When have you been most persecuted for your faith? How did you persevere and emerge stronger in your faith?
3 Considering today’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, what are three principles of Catholic Social Teaching practiced and taught in this effort? How can this Campaign point to ‘end times’ and the ‘rising of the sun of justice’?
