Bring Me Thy Pamphlet!  Don’t forget the Speaker’s Corner where you can present your favorite religious message. Recall a couple weeks ago I (Fr. Rick) suggested ways to hone our prophetic message and prepare us for the mission of evangelization.  Rather than merely lay your favorite pamphlet, magazine, bookmark or poster on one of the flat surfaces in the church, we could personalize the message in the handout and share it with the community at a prescheduled forum after Mass on Sundays. Now let’s be serious, do I actually expect people to do this?  Probably not.  BUT, more importantly, GOD EXPECTS IT.  To succeed at our mission to teach the nations and build up the Kingdom of God, we need to speak clearly and confidently about how the many facets of our Catholic Tradition have moved our hearts and changed our lives.  This is a great way to practice.  See Fr. Rick for more details.

Reporting Abuse

Do you know how to report abuse?

If you observe or have reason to believe that a child, young person or vulnerable adult has been subjected to abuse by a priest, deacon, employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, or at a diocesan location, you must report the alleged abuse to local law enforcement and state agencies, and you must notify the Diocesan Office of Safe Environment at 801-328-8641, x344.

If you have any questions or need any other help and support, please contact the Safe Environment Office at safeenv@dioslc.org or call (801)456.9344.

SEEK Conference Replay:  The recent National Seek Conference held in Salt Lake City has offered, for free, the video recordings of the Keynote

Addresses.  See the links below.  I would recommend especially #238 also featured below and I will likely make more suggestions in the coming weeks.

Homily Reflections.

Reading through today’s Sermon on the Plain from Luke’s Gospel, the word ‘now’ jumped out at me.  It gave me both an air of urgency, but then also an air of relief.  Any situation we find ourselves in can be temporary be it poor; hungry, hated, sad, rejected and excluded, denounced and insulted.  If we find ourselves in any of these conditions ‘now’, the situation can improve eventually when we place our lives in the care of God.  It’s possible that our consolations will come only in the next life, but that is what matters the most.

On the other hand, if we are rich, sated with good food, full of laughter, welcomed and popular, these conditions too can be very temporary.  Our good fortunes can change sometimes instantly with all kinds of ailments, natural catastrophes and human invasions.  What matters most is the condition of our hearts and any given point.

(Heart is defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph #2563:  The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live; according to the Semitic or Biblical expression, the heart is the place “to which I withdraw.” The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. The heart is the place of decision, deeper than our psychic drives. It is the place of truth, where we choose life or death. It is the place of encounter, because as image of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant.

This is the level of awareness and conversion we want to be in during all points of our lives, but especially at the point of death.  Today’s readings from Jeremiah and Psalm 1 tell us the exact same thing.  Follow human wisdom and we shall die a parched and miserable death.  Follow God and we shall flourish as green plants and flowers along a clear water stream, bearing all kinds of fruit.  Like weather patterns, our lives and attitudes are subject to change, often without our full awareness until the change is well entrenched.

  1. What has been the most devastating change or mishap in your life?  How did you recover?  Who was there to support you during this time?
  • When were you most popular and appreciated only to find out that you were trusting human beings who seek their strength in the flesh?  Or that you were sitting in the company of the insolent and following the counsel of the wicked?  How did you recover your sanity and once again find peace in the law of the Lord?
  • How did you share your story of ‘lost and found’ with others who might still be struggling with confusing voices in their lives?
