A BIG HOLIDAY THANK YOU!!    Flowers, music, lights and trees and wise men approaching Bethlehem.  All these valuable components help to make our Advent and Christmas seasons especially festive and welcoming to our many visitors.  Special thanks to Mass ministers who are prepared to fill in during last minute planning and scheduling.  We also provided lots of good treats and refreshments for those sticking around for a little fellowship.  AND ALL THIS HAPPENING WITH VERY LITTLE SUPERVISION BY YOUR HAPPILY ‘RETIRED’ PRIEST.  Things often go so smoothly that it’s tempting to just take it for granted.  I DON’T.  We are off to a great start to the new year.

Poverty Awareness Month is January.  Now that we’ve been further enlightened and sensitized by Advent and Christmas, please consider these daily reflections on the US Bishops’ website.

Diocesan Prayer for Vocations

Jesus, Lord of the harvest, look with love on this portion of your vineyard.

Bless the Diocese of Salt Lake City with more priests, deacons, religious, and married couples to serve your people.

Through the intercession of Our Lady, the Virgin Mary, inspire many men and women to open their hearts to respond generously to your call.  Amen.

St. Christopher Endowment:  Did you know that St. Christopher’s Parish has an endowment with the Utah Catholic Foundation?  It was started with a donation from the parish in 2020 with an initial corpus of $5000 and is intended for general parish use.  The fund has now over $8000 with interest and additional donations as of 11-30-25. The fund is set up as ‘Permanent Restricted’ which means the corpus stays in the fund, but the earnings are available to the parish annually as needed.  If you would like to make a donation to our endowment for the long-term care of St. Christopher’s, please contact Fr. Rick for further details.

Ministry Training and Day of ReflectionJanuary 24th.  All Mass ministers: Eucharistic Ministers; Lectors; Ushers; Musicians are invited (required actually) to join us for a Day of Reflection and Training on Saturday, January 24th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  These trainings and Days of Reflection are an ongoing requirement to keep us sharp and focused on the very important ministries.  It would be nice if you could come to the 8:00 AM Mass and then enjoy a cup of coffee and a heart healthy breakfast item, prior to Lauds and the first conference.

Homily Reflection Questions:

  1. This suffering servant who Isaiah anticipates in our first reading will be the one who brings peace to the nations toward whom he will show no partiality.  What method or attitude does this servant utilize in this massive undertaking?  Who in our modern world is demonstrating the method of the suffering servant?  From which nation is this type of power and influence likely to appear?

2. Today’s Gospel from Matthew ends with the line, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”  Mark’s gospel adds, “Listen to Him.”  How can we be sure that we are listening to the beloved Son?  What should be our response?

3. If Jesus actually conferred onto the Church all the power and authority of heaven and earth (Mt. 28:16-18), who should be the peacemakers and the wise people in today’s world?
