On the Demonic, by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen; compiled and edited by Fr. Dave Tomaszycki.  Emmaus Road Publishing.  Perhaps we could consider this book for Lenten reflections?

Homily Reflection –

Luke 2:24-25 “Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted -and you yourself a sword will pierce- so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

I was considering this passage from today’s gospel as I recalled the end of last Sunday’s gospel as Jesus completed His proclamation of the Prophet Isaiah in the temple: “He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.’” Lk. 4:17-21

If we had celebrated the 4th Sunday of Advent this week instead of the Presentation of the Lord, the gospel would have begun with Luke 4:21 as further reminder of our prophetic role.  Since we have been anointed as prophets at our Baptism and since the Church IS the Body of Christ, we have inherited the same prophetic role as Jesus.  We too will BE a sign that will be contradicted and be destined for the rise and fall of many in Israel (our Church, nation and world).  Our gospel proclamation will also be ‘fulfilled in the hearing’ of the congregation, and in the plaza and wherever else we witness with our daily lives.

What message do you feel most strongly compelled to proclaim on behalf of the Church?  What scroll (scripture, encyclical, pastoral letter, or advisory) would you use for your authority?

Which pamphlet would you rescue from the ‘flat spaces’ at the church to proclaim personally your devotion or mission?

What contradictions would you expect?  Who would be offended or inspired?  How would you continue to personify the ‘King of Glory’ (Ps. 24:8) even as your very heart is being pierced?  Whose strength might you draw on?
