Feast of Christ the King – Religious Freedom
On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas primas (“In the first”) to respond to growing secularism and atheism. He recognized that attempting to “thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law” out of public life would result in continuing discord among people and nations. This solemnity reminds us that while governments come and go, Christ reigns as King forever. Read more at: https://www.usccb.org/christtheking
Homily Reflections:
Jn. 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.”
Of course, that is not to say that His Kingdom is not in this world. Jesus’ Kingdom is most present in the Catholic Church which He established before going to Heaven. He promised us that He would be with us until the end of time and that the powers of hell would not prevail against us.
Amidst all the other turmoil in the world, where do you most find the solace of God’s Kingdom in your daily life? How would you describe your experience to a young 20- or 30-something who has been absorbed into the secular world?
How might you help this/these young people recognize the Kingdom of God among them and within them?
Why is it significant that Jesus is King of the whole universe and not just the earth? How is Jesus demonstrating His Kingship today in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and Haiti? On the planet of Mars?
